September Birthstone Ring : SAPPHIRE: Sacred Gem of Gems

September Birthstone: Sapphire

September’s birthstone is the Sapphire. The term sapphire usually refers to the blue variety of corundum (ruby is the red variety), however, this birthstone comes in a rainbow of other colors. Sapphire comes from the Greek word, sappheiros, and blue sapphire is one of the most popular colored stones.

For centuries, sapphire has adorned royalty and the robes of clergy. The elite of ancient Greece and Rome believed that blue sapphires protected their owners from harm and envy. Clerics of the Middle Ages wore sapphires because they symbolized Heaven, while Ancient Persians believed the Earth actually rested on a giant sapphire, which made the sky blue.

Sapphires were discovered in 1881 in Kashmir when a landslide high in the Himalayas exposed a large pocket of velvety, cornflower blue crystals. Significant quantities of sapphires have also been found in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Madagascar, the U.S. (specifically in Montana), and other countries in Asia and Africa.

The sapphire symbolizes sincerity, truth, faithfulness and nobility. It is reputed to have healing powers and Medieval Europeans believed sapphires cured plague boils, diseases of the eye and was thought to be an antidote to poison. It says to encourage truth, loyalty, wisdom, and clear thinking, especially when worn by those born in September. Due to its power, the sapphire has also been known as the “Sacred Gem of Gems”

We can include a Sapphire stone in any piece of PaulaMax jewelry. Be sure to browse through our collection and get what you need for someone who has a September birthday, anniversary, an honorable moment, or for someone who wants to wear the “Sacred Gem of Gems” all year long!
